Novoheart co-founders Professors Michelle Khine and Ronald Li’s invention, titled "Multi-scale Wrinkles for Functional Alignment of Stem Cells and Cardiac Derivatives", is issued in the U.S. as a patent (Patent No. US9,452,564 B2), by the U.S. Trademark & Patent Office (USPTO).
Heart muscle cells, or cardiomyocytes, are uniquely arranged spatially so electrical signals would be conducted in a specific direction to coordinate effective pumping of blood around the body. Instead of studying randomly arranged cardiomyocytes, Prof. Khine, Prof. Li and their teams have designed and developed nanowrinkled materials which allow specific alignment of the cardiomyocytes to reproduce the electrical conduction pattern observed in the native human heart.
